It may be cold, wet and windy but there’s nothing like a nice sculpture to put a smile on a girl’s face!
It’s even worse weather today and supposedly our whale watching trip at 10am. So we get to wear all of our gear today in a succession of layers. Have a great laugh at hubby’s expense when he puts on the waterproof outer trousers. Mr Organised only went and bought himself the wrong size….. “Large/short”. So although they fit okay he has about 4 inches of normal trouser sticking out of the bottom: he does look very funny but strangely he’s not amused as he’s going to have to wear them anyway which means he won’t be able to take them back to the shop to exhange them on our return to England.
The drive to Husavik, a fishing village on the North coast, takes about 40 minutes and by the time we get there it is pouring with rain and visibility is pretty poor. So understandably the sailing company have cancelled the trips today. Bit of a shame but we are pretty flexible the next couple of days so we re-book for two days time when hopefully the weather will improve. So it’s a day of museums in store.
The Whale Museum is pretty informative but I’m actually looking forward to visiting The Icelandic Phallological Museum http://www.phallus.is/. Probably the only museum in the world to contain a collection of penis specimens belonging to various types of mammal. How bizarre is that! Not a pornographic collection, apparently phallology is an ancient science!! Well I’m all for extending my scientific knowledge so we take a look. There are over 180 penises in this little room, 49 of them from whales! We’ve got examples from polar bears, horses, seals and walruses all over the place, attached to the walls or pickled in formalin! Goodness me, I’m blushing and hubby is feeling quite inadequate, probably because of me exclaiming “Ooh, look at the size of that one!” every few seconds. So we move onto the smaller mammal section and he can look at the teeny hamster specimen instead! The museum also has four legally-certified “gift tokens” from four men who are going to offer their penises to the collection when they die. My favourite is an American chap who has sent in a photo and cast of his beloved member which he affectionately calls “Elmo”. Apparently when he dies his wife is going to look after Elmo until she’s had enough of it; she will then send it to the museum……..which is nice!
