After our night at the 1950s party last Saturday evening, we headed off to Newcastle early-ish Sunday morning to spend some time with Mum and the rest of the family. The little fella in the montage above is my nephew, Johnny, 17 months old now and such an adorable little boy. As you can see, he enjoys reading with Uncle Dougie and Cousin Rory and, it would seem from the photo bottom right, the big cousin is giving him valuable lessons on how to use a mobile phone.
We had a tea party on Sunday afternoon, drinking Pimms and watching the Jubilee Pageant on the River Thames. I say ‘watching the pageant’ but Mum was getting sick of it by the finish and was becoming most unpatriotic. We had to laugh when she was moaning that this wasn’t meant to be a bloody Jubilee party anyway and someone countered with, “Well you were the one who made coronation chicken!”
The weather wasn’t bad at all up North so managed to get Johnny out in the garden, where I shot a little video of him with his watering can. It’s very cute, especially when he smells the flowers. When I watch this video back I’m at a loss to explain how, after 30 years living away from Newcastle, I still sound exactly like my mother…
OMG – where did the time go? I can't believe he's that old, and SO sweet. And yes, I didn't know whose voice I was listening most of the time, but then I spent the whole weekend saying "No, it's not Veronica, it's her daughter" anyway.
Sorry to have missed you all but see you at BritMums.

I'm glad you get that too – and you're living in the US!
It was a bit of a fleeting visit and I did wonder whether we'd have time to catch up but as we were back home Monday evening, I didn't think it worth trying to sort something.
Looking forward to BritMums where everyone will doubtless think we speak exactly the same too!
He he… a young Monty Don in the making, I reckon…!
I think so! Either that or, as my mum suggests in the video when she sees him with the ball, Paul Gascoigne!
Little Johnny is such a cutie pie and love those pics of your son and husband with him. I'm sure Johnny could now give me lessons on usage of my phone.
I'm sure he would be able to help: my mum has spotted him sitting with her phone and pressing the buttons using the 'two thumbs' method.
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww…….so so cute! Where does the time fly to? loved the scrunched up 'smelling the flower' face.
I know! That little face – melts my heart.
ahhh bless but byheck that's a sharp bit of windowsill at head height there.
I din't think it was at head height until I looked at the video too and I kept wondering how on earth he didn't walk into the corner. I'll have a word with Mum: she can maybe stick a plant pot there.
ps – doesn't your Rory look like you!
Interesting, I've heard that from a lot of people now, whereas they used to say he looks like Dougie. He certainly has my shape of face and narrower features than his dad.
Loved the photo with Rory, but was even more impressed with his dribbling skills! Like Libby, I loved watching him 'smell' the flower, too: reminded me so much of the boys at that age when you'd tell them to smell something and they'd more or less blow on it out of their noses…too cute!
He was good with the football, wasn't he?
I agree, they are blowers, not sniffers!
Aww what a little sweetie, and obviously I've never heard your mum but you sounded very like Sarah Millican.
Ha, I think you might be right. That's ok as I like Sarah Millican. Mum is in the video too so you can compare our voices: she's in the pale blue trousers kicking the ball to Johnny. Both of us seem to repeating the words 'What you doing?'
You and your mum sound identical! Johnny is adorable! The garden is pretty lovely as well! I am not surprised your mum was sick of Flotilla. It did go on a bit didn't it? My mum went, took some photographs, and walked all the way back to Clapham and got on a train. She's nuts.
Emma xx
The video was shot at Mum's house – she keeps the garden lovely. It's a very sheltered spot: fab when the sun comes out.
Your mother sounds a game girl haha! xx
I love your Geordie lilt and Johnny reminded me of my son at that age – identical denim dungarees! It's lovely to see them performing for an audience, especially when something they do makes everyone laugh and they catch on so quickly and do it over and over!
