The Gallery – One Word

Trish Burgess Posted on09/03/201107/04/2016 The gallery 27 Comments

We saw this lorry on a French motorway a few years ago.

Husband: “That’ll do nicely!”
Me: “What, every day? You’ll be lucky!”

The prompt for this week’s Gallery is ‘One Word’. Pop over to Tara to see more.

That's an expression I use every time I have to go to work. "Another fockedey."

Genius – and you've got me wishing I'd posted my photo of a lorry we saw in the queue for the Eurostar (German, I think) that was just called f*cker. You'd have thought someone would have said "erm, Hans, you know that's really rude in English don't you?", but clearly not.

Fockedey is a Flemish (Belgium) and originally a coastal name. It consists of two words: Focke = volk = people and dey = dag = dey, meaning people coming from the east. The name appears around 1298 in Calais (Kales). At that time people spoke a kind of old Dutch.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. Glad it made you chuckle.

Steve and The Dotterel – I think it makes an excellent new swear word and describes well that Monday morning feeling.

Plan B – great you decided to publish your rude bus after all!

Pippa – too right! I think that's quite enough.

Emma K – what a delightful little ditty. You could probably do something similar with Yesterday by The Beatles.

"Fockedey…all my troubles seemed so far away
Now my husband says he wants to play
Oh he believes in a Fockedey"

Have been over to your blog and added my two pennorth!
