The Beaufort, Knightsbridge: a true boutique hotel.

Trish Burgess Posted on05/03/201406/08/2016 London, Reviews 22 Comments

It’s funny how fate can take a hand when making decisions. Having accepted the invitation to attend the P&O event in London, I dithered for some time about overnight accommodation . Should we book somewhere near Tower Hill, where we were to be picked up by bus to travel to the venue, or elsewhere in London where we could enjoy spending the rest of the day?

While mulling this over, I noticed I had been followed on Twitter by the Beaufort Hotel in Knightsbridge. That same evening, I received an email from Secret Escapes, the discount travel club. In that week’s selection was the Beaufort Hotel. A coincidence that made me smile and, of course, investigate further. Half an hour later I’d booked a deluxe room, at a decent discounted rate.

The Beaufort Hotel is a small, 29 bedroomed, boutique hotel in the true sense of the word. Situated in a pretty square, just off Brompton Road, very close to Harrods, it’s a stylish bolt-hole with oodles of charm.

When we arrived, it felt like we’d entered a very attractive B&B, the reception desk tucked away in the corner of an inviting, warm lounge. We were upgraded to a Junior Suite, which was unexpected , then shown to our room, via a tiny old-fashioned lift which was just a little too cosy: we used the stairs for the remainder of our stay.

The room was decorated in contemporary neutral tones, there was a comfortable sofa at one end of the room, the bathroom was small but attractive. It just felt right, somehow, there was a warmth to the place, an atmosphere which made you want to kick off your shoes and just relax. Plus, unlike many modern hotels, there was masses of space for clothes – wardrobes with shelves! Oh and free WiFi.

Tempting as it was to just stay put, we did venture from our room for a short time to have a browse round Harrods and the local area. The location is excellent, close to Knightsbridge and South Kensington underground stations and within easy walking distance of the Natural History Museum, the V&A and the Science Museum, plus plenty of eateries.
On our return, drenched from a rainstorm, we were welcomed back with plenty of smiles and concern about our wet condition. The complimentary afternoon tea at the hotel was brought out for us as we removed soggy jackets and settled into the squashy sofas with the daily papers
All guests are offered tea and scones with jam and clotted cream: a lovely, welcome treat. This is on top of complimentary soft drinks 24 hours a day and free alcoholic drinks between 3pm and 11pm. It’s touches like this, the trust they have in their guests who are able to help themselves to the bar, which makes the hotel stand out from many corporate establishments.
After our night out, it seemed deliciously naughty to come through the front door and make ourselves a couple of nightcaps to take up to bed. Sleep was easy to come by as the street is very quiet. I think we were lucky we weren’t disturbed by other guests: I’m not sure sound-proofing is quite as good as in more modern hotels.
There isn’t a proper dining room so breakfast is brought to your room unless you prefer to eat in one of the two lounges. The Secret Escapes package included continental breakfast with toast and croissants.
We both agreed the Beaufort was a super little hotel: a family-owned business where customers are genuinely cared for. It didn’t feel as if we were staying in the capital. We could have been in a bijou hotel in the Cotswolds.
This is definitely a hotel I would happily return to, as I sensed other guests, welcomed back by name as they came through the door, have already done numerous times.

What a lovely hotel and a remarkable coincidence how you came to get it booked. I agree with you regarding small lifts and both my wife and I prefer to use the stairs rather than squeeze into a small lift.
I did jury duty ages ago at Knightsbridge Crown Court. The others on the jury brought sandwiches/packed lunches but I ate in Harrods every lunchtime. Great glass topped area on the roof and a nice treat after a morning sitting on a jury.

Dougie and I wished we had taken lunch in Harrods. We had soup and a sandwich in a cafe before walking through the food hall in Harrods – it looked fabulous and it would have been great to have eaten there instead. I think your idea was inspired.

I love the idea of being offered tea! Such a wonderful touch. We had this once on holiday, years ago, and it made us feel very warm towards the hotel. Sounds a great place – and in a lovely location too.

It's such a small gesture, in the whole scheme of things, but makes a huge difference to making you feel a little bit special.
It really was a super hotel – can recommend it. We used both underground stations so had access to Piccadilly, Circle and District Lines.

This sounds like a real find, especially with the cream tea and drinks. And hurrah for the free WiFi – it's ridiculous that so many hotels still charge for it. Could you tell us what you were charged for the room?

I can't remember what the Secret Escapes offer was for a standard double (I think about £180) but we paid £204 all in for a deluxe double, including the £5 fee to Secret Escapes. This included an express breakfast. The upgrade to a Junior Suite was a very welcome treat.

It sounds just perfect, both from a location and a decor point of view.
Loving the idea of a complimentary afternoon tea… 😉 xx

I think customers truly appreciate a few complimentary treats. It certainly added a few plus points when we were making our choice of where to stay. The free gin helped too…

A comfy (and beautiful by the looks of it) room and a complimentary afternoon tea sounds just perfect for me. Was that the price per night?

We loved it. Unexpectedly cosy and welcoming just off a busy London road.

      Yes it was per night.
