First column goes live

Trish Burgess Posted on08/02/201407/08/2016 Trish Takes Five 17 Comments

I mentioned last weekend that I had been asked to write a weekly column for our local newspaper, the Lincolnshire Free Press. On Tuesday my first article was published and I was quite delighted with how much space they gave me, plus the nice little byline at the top (is that what they call it? Byline? Header?)

The article itself has only just gone online this morning so if anyone would like to read it properly (and increase my page views) here’s the link: Back in the spotlight after being Mrs O.

I’ve already submitted next Tuesday’s piece and am polishing up a third one, just so I can stay ahead of the game. It’s interesting how having a deadline has motivated me. I have a renewed enthusiasm for writing and am constantly scribbling ideas on notepads.

Let’s hope the local readers are as supportive as you, my blog readers, have always been.

Fingers crossed.

Nice. It is brief. The word limit must be a nightmare. Was tempted to sign up to comment but not sure if you would encourage it on a first outing. Maybe we should wait a while before taking that next step 😉

I think it was ok but it didn't feel as good as I wanted it to be. And I agree, the brevity was a pain and I felt I stopped a bit suddenly. Now know I can have more words so next article is longer and has better rhythm.
Your thinking is just like mine – I didn't want blogging friends going over to comment straight away – let it get settled. Having a look is just right at the moment.

This is brilliant. Don't be satisfied until you've got a book deal and your own magazine show on the Beeb.

I may need you as my agent, Steve. Can arrange all this please?

Woop woop! Love it. And what a great photo to accompany the piece! I sat on my hands to stop myself from wading in and commenting straight away.

Aw aren't you lovely. If next week's article floats your boat, feel free to wade in.

You must have felt dead chuffed when you finally saw it in print, I know I would be. When you look for an agent I hope you'll put it out to tender. I'll wait to do a "troy comment" there until you are more established.

It was a thrill, Troy, yet strangely scary. Very different to writing a blog post. I think it's because people have to come and find me on this or come across me my googling something. With print, I come into their homes whether they like it or not! Makes you very careful what you say.
I will certainly tender for the job and look forward to some Troy comment in due course.

Next step: Getting paid for your articles, me think! Looking forward to the next one. xx

That would be nice! Next one is about local independent shops – bread rolls and sausages!

Well done, Trish. It's great to get a bigger local renown. You never know where it might lead to. I hope your knees have recovered from the Mrs O strain!

I hope it has some legs, unlike my own which, after many months post Acorn Antiques, are still crackling…well, my right knee still not right!
