Agatha Christie, Notre Dame and Eurovision

Here’s a selection of the latest ‘Trish Takes Five’ weekly columns I write for the Lincolnshire Free Press. Lots of random topics as usual. It’s great to have the freedom to write on any subject I choose – within reason!

Brexit Day 29 March 2019 – the UK didn’t leave after all but someone did.

Husband Dougie retired from General Practice on Brexit Day. Here’s my take on ‘Dougxit’ and how he left in an orderly fashion and plans to take back control of his borders.

A few weeks on from his retirement, the man’s on a mission. Never mind Marie Kondo and the KonMari method, get yourself a newly-retired chap to delve into the depths of your drawers.

Witness for the Prosecution at London County Hall

We saw this Agatha Christie play performed in the grand surroundings of the old council chamber. A fantastic, immersive experience and well worth a visit.

Do you love watching local TV programmes in foreign hotels?

I’m a sucker for checking out what’s on the telly when I’m tucking into complimentary ginger biscuits. Watching the Finnish version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? when we were staying in Lapland was a regular part of our daily routine.

A fascinating afternoon at the churchyard.

Dougie and I had a tour of Holbeach Cemetery Chapels to discover some of the harrowing stories that form part of the town’s social history.

Thoughts on the tragic fire at Notre Dame

Like many people I was shocked to hear about the terrible fire that engulfed this iconic building. But I was uneasy with some of the discussions and decisions made in the immediate aftermath.

The true tragedy of Notre Dame?

It’s Eurovision time again.

As the world looked to Israel for a night of crazy entertainment, I discovered a Eurovision link to our wedding 29 years ago.

I hope the retirement goes well and that it has not as yet resulted in the need to busk, in a probably a very good Scottish voice, various pop hits of yesteryear, such as ‘100o miles’, on the mean streets of the local town in order to earn a hot cup of coffee.

    PS. I am jealous.

Dougie can’t sing a note which is a great shame as I’d imagined we could earn some cash as a duo. He’s still tackling the weeds and unruly bushes so maybe he’d be better marketing himself as a Garden Doctor – “Dr Dougie: Your lawn in his hands.”
