The video evidence!

Trish Burgess Posted on06/11/201228/12/2016 Musical Theatre/Am dram/Entertainment 27 Comments

I promised you a video of my performance in our latest charity concert and, not one to renege on a deal, I now have a  DVD in my possession from which I can show you a couple of excerpts.

The first one is the duet of ‘Tonight’, from West Side Story, which I sing with Craig. You will remember we had a problem with Craig’s microphone having been switched off so there is a rather lovely moment in this romantic ballad, when someone sneaks forward to press the button on.

The second song is the Sister Act number, ‘I Will Follow Him’, which we had only just learned and I think it shows. My screechy Sister Mary Roberts bit at the end is quite painful in parts but occasionally I hit the right notes. Witness more microphone problems – this time mine being too low for me and me not having the wit to adjust it, preferring to bend at the knees.

Watching the whole video back is going to be great for all of us so we can improve on our performance and try to blend a little better as a choir, rather than as a group of individual singers. We had some brilliant solo songs – Adam singing ‘Maria’ and ‘Empty Chairs and Empty Tables, Abi singing ‘I Feel Pretty’ and ‘Hopelessly Devoted to you’, Craig singing ‘Bring Him Home’, Jane with ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ and ‘I Could Have Danced All Night’, Martin with ‘Beauty School Dropout’ , plus Elaine, Bev, Gordon, Paul, Ollie, Daran, Kevin and Harry.

It’s great to be part of it.

Well done, you looked like you were enjoying it all immensely. I couldn't listen to it properly (shh I'm at work) but liked the surreptitious button turner-onner and the bending knees which added to the technical difficult of singing high I'm sure!

Good to see you live as it were, anyway. 🙂

I think you've got the right idea, Sarah, watching it with the sound down!

It is, Julie. We aren't a choir as such but we are all part of an amateur dramatic society so usually do musicals and plays at our local theatre. We have only recently started to do this sort of thing – songs from the shows for local WIs and church groups.

What a beautiful voice you have! I'm an alto and sound like a croaking frog when I sing.

Thank you, Janet. I can't quite decide if I'm a soprano or alto so chop and change between them. Definitely a soprano in these songs.

Do you think I could be a backing singer for Bon Jovi then? The two songs are so different – it was great letting rip with the second.

I've had the dress for donkey's years. It's got little straps but I realised everyone else had their shoulders covered so I'm wearing a black shrug/cardi over the top.

I actually get very nervous before I sing. I don't know why I do it!

I've been part of this am-dram group for about 10 years now and it is good fun. The rehearsals are always a giggle but we do work hard.

I saw Craig today and said I thought this was so good. He looked nervous…..I really do though. Loved "Tonight".

He's worse than I am for being self-critical. I think it's just odd watching yourself back. I was very nervous posting the video excerpts as you don't know what people will expect.
I thought Tonight was good too. We have sung together many times and I think that helps.

I'm just now getting around to watching this, and am so impressed with your singing -clearly some of your mum's talent was passed on to you! You looked like you were really having fun with the 2nd number. I do miss my choral groups – the rehearsals are always the most fun!

Thank you! The second number wasn't as polished but was a lot of fun. We aren't doing it for the Christmas concert – I think we are leaving it for another time after we've tidied it up a bit, it didn't do my voice much good either, screeching like that. But such a giggle. I enjoy rehearsals more than the gigs – we had a great fun on Monday getting together again and adding some Christmas tunes to the set.

I've had a problem listening to these as my iPad went silent on me but all is now fixed. You have a great voice! I really enjoyed both of those – microphone incidents notwithstanding!

Damn fine singing to add to your damn fine writing.
A few wrong notes at the end, but hey I'm still jealous, having been encouraged to mime on more than one occasion.

      Thank you!

Those notes at the end make me cringe – but I had to show them to you. It was one of those occasions when I could have sung a higher note or a lower note (as it was freestyle-ish) and went somewhere in the middle!
