For the 100th edition of Tara Cain’s online ‘Gallery‘ the theme this week is Picture Postcard. Oh what to choose! I dithered for some time before I selected this shot of Niagara Falls. It can be quite difficult to get a decent photograph and I’m rather pleased with this one – some foliage in the foreground, the American Falls visible behind and, bang in the centre, the Maid of the Mist boat which takes passengers on a very wet trip to see the falls close-up.
Niagara Falls is very commercialised so this photo gives no clue as to the mass of amusement arcades and all manner of gaudy, tacky establishments behind me. But, ignoring the tat, the falls are impressive and the boat ride was certainly the best way to experience the sheer power of them. When the trip is finished, you’ll look something like this:
You're Dougie looks rather nice all wet 🙂 lovely pictures.
A contender for Mr Wet T-Shirt?
Great. I went there many years ago (my oldest friend lives in Toronto) and LOVED the Maid of the Mist, but the biggest memory is the sheer power of that water!
I'm so glad we did take the boat ride as, I agree, that was the best part of the visit.
Wow, that is amazing, and I can only imagine is even more awesome (in the true sense of the word) when you are there in person.
One you get past the tacky parts it really is a sight to see.
Great pics, such an impressive sight too. I hope you dried off quickly. 🙂
When I was looking at old photos for this I hadn't remembered taking this one but realised it was a pretty good one. Thankfully it was sunny so we did dry off reasonably quickly!
That is definitely on my bucket list!
One to be ticked off the list but see my answer to Lady Briggs above, in case you want to change your mind.
For me too this is somewhere I would definitely like to go. My only concern now seeing your photo afterwards is whether the experience might shrink me down in size.
You wear a blue raincoat so hopefully it's only your head that might shrink.
Very impressive! I sadly could not make it there when I went to Toronto last year, but definitely will on my next trip…
If you do go back, check out Niagara-on-the-lake, a beautiful small town nearby: it was a chocolate box location, a world away from Niagara itself.
Yep…picture postcard alright…..lovely photo.
Thanks Libby x
We went in a very cold April back in 96 and the entire thing was frozen solid… I've seen Niagara but still haven't heard it.
Shame. That's the best bit!
I'm glad I saw them but, between you and me, the waterfalls I saw in Iceland were more exhilarating and somehow, without the funfair atmosphere, better examples of seeing nature in the raw….but don't tell anybody;-)
It's quite clever how they shove all the amusements on one side so any photo of the falls won't show the gaudy bits! I think I took the photo from a hotel balcony where our tour group had lunch: it was a good spot.
Beautifully framed photo Trish 🙂
Thanks Emma. I did wonder whether I should lop off a bit from the bottom but then decided to leave it alone!
Gorgeous – another one on my "I really want to go there" list. An instant 'wow'
Thank you! Seems like it's a 'must see' for many people.
Now that is a 'proper' picture postcard!!
A good old traditional one!
Oh, Niagra Falls is certainly one place I would love to visit! Beautiful picture!
XxX
Glad you like it. I hadn't realised it was quite such a good one until yesterday. Yet I took it in 2008!
I'm terribly ashamed that I've never been to Niagra – especially after having lived in upstate NY for a while. It's exactly right for a postcard!
Can't you fit it in when you next do your mammoth run around the US?!
Wow now that's a picture for a postcard x
Lovely picture, would so love to visit Niagara Falls
Great pics. I went there as a girl. While the environs are commercialised, I remember being blown away by the scale of the falls themselves.
Thanks Gina, bubbablue and Jen. Pleased the photo came out so well. That blue sky helped a lot.
That brings back some great memories of our holiday in Toronto 2years ago. I've got some photos of the four of us drenched on the Maid of the Mist, despite the freebie PAC-a-macs!
We loved our holiday in Canada. Very happy memories too.
Those macs don't do much, do they. All the spray goes down your neck!
darn. you were only 20 mins away from my house when you went there in 08. Who knew? I'll just get my time machine out and meet you there! 🙂
Right you are! Get the kettle on!
Aw you didn't buy the cheap macs that were on offer! We did but I didn't get a photo like yours. I was quite disappointed by all the arcades and circus that was there in all honesty 🙁 but I cannot deny the Falls are magnificent and well worth the visit
We did buy the cheap macs but the boys had already taken them off when I took the photo. I think they had their hoods down so got wetter than me.
I agree, was very disappointed with the commercialism.
